Pilates is an exercise system that was developed by a man known as Joseph Pilates early in the 20th Century. The method was formed by Joe himself whilst he was placed in enforced internment in England in the outbreak of WWI, with the intention to improve the rehabilitation programme for the detainees who were suffering from injury and illness.
It was designed to aid the injured and sick to regain their health by strengthening, stretching and stabilising key muscles.
The focus primarily was on fewer precise movements requiring control and technique rather than increasing the repetitions.
Pilates classes build strength, flexibility and lean muscle tone with an emphasis on lengthening the body and aligning the spine. The method focuses on the deep muscles in your body which are responsible for posture, stabilisation and core strength.
Pilates especially addresses postural weaknesses which occur from injury, illness and lifestyle habits. It has an ability to improve postural weaknesses which we all develop through our lifestyle. Pilates offers a variety of ways to practice whether it be in a group on the mat or in a small studio class using specially designed apparatus.

I was encouraged to take up Pilates in 2009, following a horse riding accident – I reluctantly started Pilates and was instantly hooked and have never looked back. I left behind a challenging and rewarding corporate career to investigate the Pilates Method further. I felt that it would be a way that I could positively contribute to a person’s life.
I have had the opportunity of experiencing the rehabilitative side of the Pilates method following several knee surgeries.
I know firsthand the amazing benefits, the versatility and endless variety of modifications it can offer – whilst still challenging the mind and body.
I take great care in preparing personalised sessions, as we are all unique and have varying needs. I am committed to developing my own skills as an Instructor, through ongoing training and education. I have a keen interest in Fascia training and the benefits of looking after the fascia first.
